KRG welcomes increase in diplomatic representations in Kurdistan Region
Erbil, Kurdistan – Iraq (KRG.org) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) warmly welcomes the recent increase in diplomatic representations to the Kurdistan Region in Iraq, in full coordination with Iraq’s federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Kingdom of Sweden has become the 16th nation to establish diplomatic representation in the Kurdistan Region. The KRG congratulates Sweden on this step and looks forward to strengthening relations and cooperation in a number of sectors.
Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has emphasized the importance of outreach and strengthened relations with foreign governments and companies as the Kurdistan Region continues its process of reconstruction and improvement to its institutional capacity. The KRG has promoted relations with Arab states in particular.
Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, heralded the rapid development of the international diplomatic community in the Kurdistan Region. “This is an essential step towards facilitating coordination with firms and governments from around the world, and will serve as a bridge for cooperative initiatives in a wide variety of sectors, including infrastructure development, commerce, industry, agriculture, and cultural and educational exchange.”
He added, “With the opening of each new diplomatic office, our Region takes a step forward in terms of building new and important relationships. We are confident that more offices will open in the future, and we welcome all who wish to join us here in Erbil.”
A number of nations are in the process of completing the necessary protocol procedures to establish diplomatic ties with the Kurdistan Region. Qatar, for example, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the KRG which included consideration of such a step.
Four nations have established full consulates general in the Region – the Russian Federation, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Republic of France.
The following nations have Embassy Offices in the Region – the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Korea. The Republic of Austria, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Italy, and the Hellenic Republic of Greece have established trade offices.
The Kingdom of Netherlands, the Kingdom of Spain, Japan, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Kingdom of Sweden have Honorary Consuls to represent them in the Kurdistan Region.

Kurdistan region to export oil Monday
Erbil, 31 May (AKnews) – it was expected that Kurdistan region’s oil from the Tawki oil field, 5 km East of Zakho district, will be exported Monday as of 16:00 pm (1300 GMT) for the first time, attended by the KRG Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani, world ambassadors, representatives of the oil companies plus regional and federal officials, a concerned source reported.
Director of the Tawki project, Morgan Forman told AKnews Sunday that “the Tawki project has the ability of producing 50000 barrels of oil a day.”
“Now we produce 50000 barrels, and in the future, this amount will increase” Forman said also adding that “it is indefinite how long will the fields continue to produce oil, as it is very difficult to know.”
The oil of the field has never been sold to anyone, nor has it been exported as of yet, Forman said, “it has only been used to meet internal needs of petrol and kerosene.”
Previously, KRG’s Minster of the natural resources, Ashti Hawrami, had told AKnews that Kurdistan region can now produce 100000 barrels per day and by the end of the year 2009, “we will increase oil output to 250000 barrels daily, and by the end of 2010, 450000 barrels a day” he said, before adding that “I expect Kurdistan region’s oil production will reach 1 million barrels per day in the next 4 years.”
According to the Iraqi constitution, Kurdistan region is allowed to sign oil contracts, but till lately, the Iraqi oil ministry did not submit itself to the constitution, which was more a political issue rather being constitutional.
KRG prime Minster, had said that Kurdistan region’s oil income will go to the Federal Governments treasury, and is for all Iraqis “and we will have our shares from there”, the London-based Al-Sharq Al-awsat last week quoted Barzani as saying so.
According to economic experts, the region’s oil export is an attempt to offset the deficit in the general budget caused by the decrease in the oil prices in world markets.
Kurdistan region’s oil is set to fill the gaps in the general 2009 budget of Iraq.
Iraq has the third largest oil reserve in the world, according to the latest researches by the OPEC organization.

Asim said the Iraqi constitution stipulates that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) coordinate with the federal government on all oil-related matters but that "unfortunately, this has not been the case."
Asim acknowledged that Article 112 of the Iraqi constitution does grant the KRG the right to sign oil contracts, but he said the document also stipulates that such matters should be coordinated with the oil ministry of the federal government.
Earlier this week, Kurdistan began exporting crude oil for the first time, sending 100,000 bbl from the Taq Taq and Tawke oil fields via the Iraq-Turkey pipeline to the Turkish port of Ceyhan (OGJ Online, June 1, 2009).
