The government intends to auction off oil contracts to foreign companies for the first time since Iraq nationalized its oil industry more than three decades ago. If all goes according to plan in the first round, foreign oil companies will move in to help Iraq revive production at six developed fields that have suffered from years of war and neglect.

CHINA Petroleum & Chemical, the country's largest refiner, has declined to confirm or deny a report it is working on a bid of about $US8 billion ($9.8bn) for Toronto's Addax Petroleum.
Huang Wensheng, a spokesman for Beijing-based Sinopec, as China Petroleum is known, would not comment on a South China Morning Post report that the company is in talks with Addax on a potential takeover.
Addax rose 6.2 per cent to $C42.23 ($47.38) in Toronto trading yesterday, compared with the 0.01 per cent drop in the benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index.
Sinopec wants bigger stakes in oil and gas projects in Africa and Latin America to guard against a possible rebound in oil prices, chairman Su Shulin has said.
Switzerland-based Addax has operations in West Africa and holds exploration licences in Iraq's Kurdistan, which has begun exporting oil.
China National Petroleum and China National Offshore Oil are also interested in a deal with Addax, the Hong Kong-based newspaper said. Addax says it has started exports from the Taq Taq licence area in Kurdistan.
The crude is trucked to the Khurmala station, then goes by pipeline to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, Turkey.
Exports from DNO International ASA's Tawke field, another project in the region, have also commenced. The Financial Times reported yesterday that Korea National Oil, the state-run oil developer, is considering a possible takeover of Addax or an asset deal with the company.

Når en lokal avis finder en nyhed (eller genoptrykker et Sharistani interview) ryger det hurtigt til reuters og ret hurtigt til Hegnar. Derfra videre til bloomberg som research til en anden artikel. Sidenhen indgår historien som research til længere baggrundsartikler hos Forbes, Fortune, businessWeek, osv.....
Det helt grundlæggende journalistarbejde i felten tror jeg er væsentligt på retur..... istedet går det idag ud på at finde historier hist og pist på nettet, få det verificieret så godt som muligt andetsteds (evt. vi andet medie som har den samme basiskilde) og dernæst få en eller anden latterlig, intetsigende og indlysende standardkommentar fra en ekspert. Og nej, det er ikke kun i finansverdenen..... det går igen i hele medielandskabet.... desværre.
