Rates drop again

Although Australian cargoes were still in demand, the figures on offer earlier this week to smaller units for Pacific roundtrips were now almost out of reach for bigger ships, which sent the index down further.

BHP Billiton continued to look towards the panamax sector to satisfy it appetite for Australian roundtrips while there was also a notable Black Sea pick-up in the sector.

--------------------------------------------
Capesizes (Index 72.498 USD/dagen)

Rio Tinto has the 170,000-dwt Snowdon (built 1998) from China to Australia and back at just $80,000, between $10,000 and $18,000 less than earlier this week.

Hyundai Merchant Marine spent $92,000 a day taking the 174,300-dwt Ocean Confidence (built 2005) on a front haul via Brazil.

Shourong will run the 174,200-dwt Heng Shan (built 2007) from China to the west coast of South America and back at $90,000.

--------------------------------------------
Panamaxes (Index 33.626 USD/dagen)

Louis Dreyfus was the one going high on a trip from the Med to the Black Sea and Far East, the French charterer spending $48,000 a day on the 74,100-dwt Alabanda (built 1995).

BHP booked a pair of units for China-Australia roundtrips at $35,500 a day each, the 74,500-dwt Power Steel (built 1999) and the 75,100-dwt Danae (built 2001).

Oceanvast spent just $500 a day less but a bonus of $0.5m for a trip from Australia to China with the 72,000-dwt Banasol (built 2001).

Numbers were good in the Atlantic where Norden has the 82,100-dwt Kesaria (built 2009) from South America to Europe at $37,000 plus $700,000 on top.

E-Ships booked the 74,300-dwt Diamond Seas (built 2001) from the Med to the Red Sea at $37,500. And Swiss Marine has the 74,000-dwt Excalibur (built 1999) from the Indian Ocean to the Far East for $38,000.

Norden and Oceanvast each booked ships for between 11 and 13 months, the former spending $25,000 on the 76,600-dwt Sorrento (built 2004) and the latter $23,500 on the 74,000-dwt Pantelis (built 2000).

--------------------------------------------
Supramaxes (Index 25.849 USD/dagen)

This sector has been very quiet of late and rates, particular term rates, were not impressive. Nordic Bulkcarriers has the 48,000-dwt Gulf Ahmadi (built 1989) for three to five months at $21,000.

ED&F Man spent $27,000 daily from West Africa to the Indian Ocean via Brazil with the 56,100-dwt Darya Brahma (built 2006).

Hong Kong: The handy sector is likely to fare better than other bulkers in the coming year, according to one of the best known handy names in the business.

Klaus Nyborg, deputy chairman of Hong Kong?s Pacific Basin revealed recently to Seatrade Asia Online that 49% of his fleet is already covered for 2010, a figure that is similar to this stage last year.

Moreover, the company has fixed its handysize ships at an average daily rate of $14,200, again similar to this year?s figure, which Nyborg said would give ?good margins?.

?Handysizes have been the segment with the biggest short fall,? Nyborg said, ?and the highest scrapping rates so this year there has been no overall growth.?

Nyborg suggested that handies will be ?slightly more isolated? to other sectors going forward as the larger ship types have such huge orderbooks still to deliver. [25/11/09]
