WEEKLY MARKET REPORT
May 7th, 2010 / Week 18

The freight rates and thus the market indices were not affected by the recent holidays in the Far East and we are ending the week in a firming tone, across all of the market segments.

The BCI once again gained most ending the week around 10.5% higher.

It is interesting to note that the BSI rose over 6% as worldwide demand for supramaxes has increased for yet another week.

The BPI and BSHI rose over 4%.

At present it is obvious that the owners have the upper hand in the dry bulk market.

The record numbers of newbuildings seem to be absorbed FOR THE TIME BEING despite fears of the opposite.

Demand for raw materials in China continues to increase, with iron ore imports set to increase by 5% this year.

Whilst China has a steady demand from the main iron ore and coal export ports in Brazil and Australia we are seeing an increasing trend of sourcing more materials from other places like Colombia, Venezuela, Indonesia and even Russia.

This no doubt has to do with the never ending pricing issues that the major Chinese Mills have with the three major iron ore producers (BHP, Rio Tinto and Vale).
