"China plans to invest a total of 12 trillion yuan ($1.9 trillion) over the next forty years to boost wind power's coverage of electricity demand
(Beijing) - Wind power is set to meet 17 percent of China's electricity demand by 2050, according to goals set by the Energy Research Institute under the National Development & Reform Commission and the International Energy Agency.
The country's installed wind power capacity will reach 200 million, 400 million and 1 billion kilowatts, respectively, by 2020, 2030, and 2050, according to the roadmap report jointly released by the two agencies on October 19. China will invest a total of 12 trillion yuan in the next forty years to achieve this goal.
The report noted that wind power can achieve commercial viability at around 2020, when costs for wind energy generated on land will flatten on par with costs for coal-fired power.
The Chinese government will focus on the development of onshore wind power before 2020, with plans to cultivate the development of the offshore wind energy over the following 30 years, said the report.
Tackling the bottleneck in on-grid delivery continues to be a major issue in the development of clean energy, according to the report."
