I invest a lot in venture capital funds, and one of the areas, many of these have invested a lot in recently, is "The Internet of Things", or "IoT". Approx. 15 years ago, this was a lot of hype, but very little action. But now it's getting real.
WHAT IS IT?
It is about linking physical objects to online networks; typically using Internet protocol. These objects may have sensors, action buttons and transmitters, etc. The connection will often be "machine-to-machine" ("M2M"), where the "machine" might in fact be any physical product.
SOME EXAMPLES
1.Action bottons. An example is Amazon Dash, which are cool buttons you can put next to the location of things you frequently run out of, or you can point at barcodes with your personal barcode reader. You can then pre-program the buttons so that each automatically re-orders more of the same, such as print paper, toner or beer.
2. Cars that constantly transmit their location to each other and thereby automatically can prevent collisions.
3.Thermostat systems that optimize temperature and energy use through sensors.
4. Remote monitoring of buildings, rooms or utilities such as washer and dryers. These can have smart alarms to call attention to anything from a burglar to a crying baby or a washing machine which should be emptied.
5. Normal wearable devices that collect and transmit useful data. This could be a smart watch that counts your steps or checks your heartbeat, or a toothbrush that collects data about your health.
6. Distribution chain management, whereby objects carry bar-codes, RFIDs or other typically passive transmitters, so that the location of each object can be tracked in real time.
7. Tracking of location of specific people, if they carry mobile phone or devices with transmitters such as RFIDs. The latter may be embedded witin membership cards, or it might be ski lift cards or night club membership cards. Uber is actually also closed to being an IoT service.
8. Environmental sensing, whereby problems in, for instance, air, water or soil quality or even location of wildlife are reported in real time, thus triggering protective action.
9. Real time tracking of farm animals or of the condition of plants and soil in the farms.
10. Infrastructure management such as automated operations of railway tracks, bridges, windfarms, etc.
HOW BIG WILL IT BECOME?
According to forecasts from Gartner Group and others, there will probably be approx. 30 billion objects linked to the Internet by 2030. From there on it will continue to grow exponentially.
WHY IS IT EXPLODING NOW?
1. It typically combines several of the following technologies: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, near Field Communication, 4th or 5th generation mobile, cloud computing, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Telepresence, RFIDs, high definition sensors and more. Some of these technologies are rather new, and some have dropped a lot in price lately.
2. Furthermore, there has been a bottleneck in the current Internet protocol ("IPv4"), which" only" allows 4.3 billion Internet addresses. However, we are about to solve this with IPv6, which allows 340,282,366,920,938,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 addresses".
