While higher gasoline prices drove demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles such as GM's Chevrolet Cruze, analysts said the rising prices at the pump could threaten any recovery.

Ford [F 15.2677 0.3577 (+2.4%) ] said total sales in March rose 19.2 percent and the automaker outsold GM for only the second time since 1998.

"The recovery is fragile," Edmunds.com analyst Michelle Krebs said, adding that sales in March weakened later in the month as gasoline prices rose.

"The consumer does not like uncertainty, and they had a heavy dose of it in March." Also raising concerns is the expected impact of the Japan crisis on the global auto supply chain.

GM [GM 32.18 1.15 (+3.71%) ] said total U.S. sales in March for its four brands rose 11.4 percent from last year to 206,621 vehicles.

Including its four former brands-Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn-GM sales rose 9.6 percent.

And Nissan [NSANY 17.62 -0.03 (-0.17%) ] said its sales rose 27% to 121,141 vehicles in March in the U.S., the highest total for a month ever.

The rise was driven by an incentive program that Nissan has been running this year.

Nissan brand sales rose 28% to 109,854 and Infiniti sales rose 14% to 11,287 vehicles in March. Among the best sellers for the month were the Japan-built Rogue compact SUV, registering 14,174 sales, up 69% over the previous year. Nissan Sentra sales doubled to 17,851.

Edmunds had expected a gain off 11 percent including the former brands, and TruCar.com and JP Morgan also said the results missed expectations.

Auto sales represent one of the first snapshots every month of U.S. consumer demand, and 34 economists surveyed by Reuters estimated March sales would rise 12 percent on average.

Other automakers are scheduled to report March U.S. sales later on Friday.

March is traditionally a stronger sales month than February, but lower incentive spending by GM, Toyota Motor Corp and others likely resulted in a lower growth rate than February's stronger-than-expected 27 percent gain.

GM sales chief Don Johnson said incentives per vehicle on average were $600 to $800 lower last month and the automaker would be prudent and disciplined with its deals going forward.

The expected slower industry growth has raised concerns about the recovery in the U.S. auto market, although U.S. employment on Friday recorded a second straight month of solid gains in March and the jobless rate fell to a two-year low of 8.8 percent, marking a decisive shift in the labor market that should help underpin the economic recovery.

Despite the sales increase, rising oil prices and the resulting pain at the pump could push consumers away from more lucrative light trucks.

Light truck sales, which include pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, make up a little more than half of U.S. auto sales and account for a disproportionate share of profits at the U.S. automakers because of their higher prices.

"Clearly, with gasoline prices rising, we have seen a shift to the compact segment," Johnson said.

"Whether that continues or not I think depends on what the trend of gasoline prices is going to be in the future." Gasoline prices rose more than 3 cents to $3.60 a gallon over the last week, the Energy Department said.

The average price of regular gas is 80 cents higher than a year ago as conflict in Libya and rising tensions in the Middle East have sent the cost of crude oil to above $100 a barrel.

Another focus is the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami last month which caused many supplier plants there to close or cope with power outages.

Johnson said GM is monitoring the situation closely, but declined to speculate on its impact.

He said the U.S. automaker has a "very good" level of vehicle inventory going into April.

GM said total U.S. sales for passenger cars rose 15 percent in March, while crossover and pickup truck sales rose 20 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

GM shares were up 2.5 percent at $31.80 on the New York Stock Exchange at midday, below their $33 price when they reappeared on the NYSE last November.

Ford shares were up 2.7 percent at $15.31.

Powered by an improving economy, U.S. auto sales rose substantially in March with Chrysler Group LLC, Nissan Motor Co. and Ford Motor Co. leading the gains.

Chrysler reported sales of 121,730 cars and light trucks in March, an increase of 31% from a year ago and its highest monthly total in nearly three years. Nissan nearly matched Chrysler's total, selling 121,141 new vehicles, thanks to heavy incentives.

Ford sales jumped 19% to 212,295, enough to put its monthly total ahead of bigger rival General Motors Co. for only the second time since 1998.

GM's sales increased 10% to 206,621 vehicles on brisk sales of passenger cars. Results were slowed somewhat because it pulled back from the high sales incentives offered at the beginning of 2011.

GM exceeded Ford in retail sales to individual consumers who buy cars and trucks from dealers. Many in the auto industry consider retail sales a more accurate reflection of a company's performance in the market. Ford's total was helped by sales to fleet buyers such as rental fleets and government agencies. They made up 35% of Ford's total, and only 27% of GM's.

Hyundai Motor Co. also reported its best monthly sales ever in the U.S., posting a 32% increase to 61,873 vehicle sales.

A total for March new-vehicles sales was not available on at midday on Friday because some auto makers were still reporting their figures.

Overall, demand for autos in the U.S. seems to be holding to a steady, upward trajectory, following another drop in unemployment and further rises in corporate profits, Don Johnson, GM's top sales analyst, said in a conference call. GM estimated that the seasonally adjusted, annualized sales pace in March reached 13 million vehicles. That would mark the sixth month in a row the figure topped 12 million, although it would be down from February's pace of 13.4 million vehicles.

Mr. Johnson acknowledged that higher gasoline prices are pushing U.S. consumers to buy more small cars and fewer larger models like trucks-the kind of vehicles that generate big profits for GM, Ford and Chrysler.

"We are starting to see a shift to compact cars but consumers are not delaying purchases," Mr. Johnson said. "That's really good news."

He also said there remains "a lot of fluidity and uncertainty" around the impact that the crisis in Japan will have on production in the coming months. GM last month idled a U.S. small truck factory in a move to conserve parts as Japan-based suppliers struggled to get operations back online following the earthquake and tsunami.

GM outspent all its rivals on discounts in January and February, prompting some analysts to question whether the company had returned to an old practice of using profit-eroding incentives to drive down sales.

On Friday, the company said its incentive spending levels in March were the lowest since the company emerged from bankruptcy in the summer of 2009.

Chrysler, which like GM was bailed out the by the U.S. government and reorganized in a bankruptcy court, redesigned almost of its models for 2011, and saw benefits from that effort in March. Sales of Dodge vehicles, which were given plusher interiors, rose 46% in March. It is unclear how much of the gain was driven by fleet sales because Chrysler is one of the few auto makers that does not break out retail and fleet sales figures.

Nissan's March total was the highest it has ever recorded in the U.S. market. The company has been running a substantial sales-incentive program that pays dealers bonuses for driving up sales, according to dealers familiar with the effort.

Among the best sellers for the month was the Japan-built Rogue compact SUV, registering 14,174 sales, up 69% over the previous year. Sales of the Sentra compact doubled to 17,851 vehicles. Nissan also 298 Leaf all-electric cars and has sold a total of 452 since the car's December launch.

bilsalg indien 11 03

for sammenhængene

2/4 2011 09:25 le 040853

2/4 2011 15:31 johnsen 040871

hej pete45;

Godt at se dig "Just in time". Lidt ligesom bil- og elektronikproduktion.

2/4 2011 15:45 pete45 040872

Japansk bilsalg ned med 25 pct. Europa ned med o,6

Hej Johnsen,
