DNO expects Iraq oil export deal in Q2

Published: 14:21, 10.mar.2009

LONDON, March 10 (Reuters) - DNO International expects Iraq's government and the Kurdish regional leadership to agree a deal that would allow DNO to export crude oil from its Kurdish fields in the coming months, Chief Executive Helge Eide said on Tuesday.

"It would be very difficult to see it dragging on beyond the second quarter," Eide told Reuters in an interview.

The Norwegian oil exploration company discovered large volumes of oil in the Kurdish region but faces the prospect of not being able to bring the crude to market.

Eide also said that he expected the new board of Norwegian North Sea-focused oil company Det norske oljeselskap

, in which DNO has stake of around 25 percent, to come up with a new strategy in the coming months.

If Detnor does not come up with a convincing strategy for expanding through the acquisition of fields DNO may sell its stake.

LONDON, March 10 (Reuters) - DNO International (DNO.OL) said it expects Iraq's government and the Kurdish regional leadership to agree a deal that would allow DNO to export crude from its Kurdish fields in the coming months, sending DNO's shares soaring.

"It would be very difficult to see it dragging on beyond the second quarter," Chief Executive Helge Eide told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

DNO shares were suspended after the interview following a 7 percent rise in its shares to 4.70 crowns.

The Norwegian oil exploration company discovered large oil volumes of oil in the Kurdish region but faced the prospect of not being able to bring the crude to market because of the failure of Baghdad and the Kurds to agree a new oil law.

However, Eide is optimistic that permission to export the Kurdish crude will be granted in the near future. Physical exports could begin soon after because DNO has almost completed a tie-up to an export pipeline to Turkey.

"We are basically there technically," he said.

The Kurdish regional government is handling the negotiations with the Baghdad government, Eide said.

DNO had hoped to receive permission to export its Kurdish crude last year and Eide accepted DNO was "maybe a bit too optimistic" in the past.

The right to export would allow DNO lift its production significantly and fill the company's coffers. Eide said he aims to use the proceeds to make acquisitions in the Middle East and East Africa.

Also in the coming months, DNO may decide on whether to maintain or sell its 25 percent stake in Norwegian North Sea-focussed oil company Det norske oljeselskap (DETNOR.OL).

Detnor's new board is working on a new strategy plan.

"That company should take a lead in the consolidation process in Norway ... we'd like to see a clear roadmap from the board," Eide said.

DNO has also hired advisors to investigate other possibilities, including a sale of its Detnor stake, if DNO is unconvinced by Detnor's new plan.

Eide criticised Detnor for becoming overly focussed on the development of the Froy field, which it co-owns with Britain's Premier Oil (PMO.L), in the past. Eide said Froy was now on hold. (Additional reporting by John Acher in Oslo; Editing by Rupert Winchester)

Iraq Kurd leader says could export 1 mln bpd oil
12-03-2009 15:17:00

LONDON, March 12 (Reuters) - The Kurdish region of Iraq has the capacity to export one million barrels per day of crude in three years if an agreement on revenue sharing can be reached with the central government, the region's leader said on Thursday.

"Today, the region is able to export 100,000 barrels per day and towards the end of the year we will be able to export 200,000 bpd, and by the end of next year it will be 450,000 bpd and after three years we will be able to produce 1 million bpd," Masoud Barzani, president of Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region told a conference in London.

The region currently produces little oil as it is unable to sell crude outside the region, which has local demand of only on on few thousand bpd. Barzani declined to say when he expected an export agreement with Baghdad.
